50 years of Toyota in the U.S.

On October 31, 1957, Toyota officially opened for business in the United States. The American auto business hasn't been the same since.

Corolla

In 1968, Toyota did the Corona one better with the new Corolla. This is the car that would go on to become the carmaker's best-selling nameplate.

It was powered by a 1.1-liter four-cylinder 60-horsepower engine. A second-generation version, launched in 1970, boosted horsepower to 73.

By that time, Toyota was the second largest importer of cars into the United States after Volkswagen.
