Best neighborhoods to retire

If life after work means more than a beach chair, the best place to retire might be the big city. We looked at 30 of the nation's largest metro areas and found the right neighborhoods for you.

Las Vegas
Best place to retire: East Las Vegas/Whitney
Pros: Near everything, but removed enough from The Strip to be peaceful
Cons: You'll need a car, and Nellis AFB is nearby, so you'll hear some planes
Real estate: A house in a 55 community costs $235,000 and up; a condo closer to the highway costs less than $200,000. Rentals are under $1,500 a month.
There's more to Vegas than endless casinos and all-you-can-eat buffets. East Las Vegas, while just 5 miles from The Strip, is a little bit of city and a little bit desert, mixed with retirement luxury.

Closer to the highway bordering the area near the Whitney neighborhood, you can find apartments and condos for purchase or rental.

In the eastern corner of East Las Vegas, a new Del Webb 55 community, Solera at Stallion Mountain, offers plenty of amenities including swimming pools, tennis courts and a state-of-the-art recreation center.

The Silver Bowl Sports Complex and the 2,900-acre Desert Wetlands Park sit at the bottom of East Las Vegas. Lake Mead National Park is adjacent. Horesman's Park sits in the middle of the area, with equestrian events all year.
